Lynn's Notes:

Aaron was well aware of what things cost and was encouraged to earn his own money with which to buy extras. Letters came suggesting that "Michael Patterson's" parents were far too strict and that I was putting out the wrong message. I was suggesting that kids work! I was stunned. I had been thinking that this was a good thing. Maybe it was...when I was a kid!

It is still a good thing. Too many parents are too easy on their kids. Kids that earn their money learn the value of money, and learn to respect the things that are given to them.

In my humble opinion, as I am 77 years old, I find that the younger generation has grown up lazy and self-gratifying. The majority was never taught to work. Seems to me that work for the young produced some great habits and self-discipline. I find nothing offensive in your strip. You had the right idea.

I agree with the other comments. Today's kids want instant gratification, without effort. Fortunately, my nieces caught on quick that life does not work that way.

I think you did your son a great service. Kids that learn early the value of hard work and money do so much better in life. I've seen both sides of the equation.

These days, that doesn't really work. Sure, they cost $50 when Mike was in the store, but by the time makes that much(considering the time he'll need for homework & sleep), odds are they'll be up to $75!

I agree that it was and still is a good thing. I have a 16-year-old, and people are amazed at how respectful he is and praise us for how mature he is - and he still manages to have fun somehow! It's the ones that always give their kids anything and everything that wonder why their children are such monsters and why they end up with children that never leave the nest and aren't successful. They need look no further than the mirror.
