Lynn's Notes:

When my children started going to school, I found it interesting to hear them talk about their teachers' private lives. Teachers talked about their children, their summer holidays, their childhoods, and so on. In short, they admitted they were real people! I think this helped my kids to relax, to trust, and to enjoy their classroom experience.

I do this in my intro art college classes- and it does make a difference. The students have something to engage them in how the material relates to my life, and so can see how it relates to their own. Also, they aren't afraid to talk about their other professors in front of me, so I learn about all sorts of things students find annoying- or can intercede and explain the pedagogy behind what another professor is doing, thus dissipate the frustration.
