Lynn's Comments: This was based on our neighbours in Lynn Lake, who had an elaborate train set in their basement. When I saw it, I thought it belonged to their eldest son, but was surprised to discover that it was the dad who had set it up. This was long before my husband built a model train you could actually ride on! What is it with trains, anyway?

Lynn's Comments: There was so much to learn and to build. With artistry and serious focus, my husband built one of the most intricate and beautiful models in Ontario. He connected with other like-minded men, and soon, our circle of friends included Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas: two of the “9 Old Men” —the original animators at the Disney Studios in Los Angeles. Ollie's ride-on trains added to Walt Disney's fascination with model railways. After he had filled his own back yard, his wife suggested he find a piece of land where he could really enjoy his hobby…and Disneyland, the theme park, was born!

Lynn's Comments: In reality, my husband and I did talk about having a third child. Our son and daughter were growing up, I did miss "my baby," and we had room in our home and our hearts for another. The sobering truth was, we just didn’t have the time.

Lynn's Comments: Yes, we did have a train set running around our Christmas tree. One thing you can say about high quality model railroads is…they work!

Lynn's Comments: My husband had an amazing model railway set up in our home. When it became too much for the basement, he built another outside—one you could ride on! The idea for this came when we went to visit Ollie Johnston, one of the "9 old men" of Disney fame. Ollie’s ride-on railway was the inspiration for Walt Disney’s train obsession leading to his creation of the Disneyland theme park. It was also the catalyst for our outdoor railway–something our friends' and neighbours' kids will remember for the rest of their lives.

Lynn's Comments: My husband was a serious model railroader. After a while, I understood the vocabulary and the methods for creating good tracks and dioramas, but I never understood the passion.
