Lynn's Comments: Lunch is an all-important event. A disagreeable lunch can destroy the rest of an otherwise productive day. When my dad made lunch, I knew I was going to get a tomato and cheese sandwich. This is OK if consumed at the time of assembly, but after a lunch-bucket ride and time in a locker, a tomato and cheese sandwich is horrible. On "dad days," I should have made my own lunch....but when you're a kid, complaining is much easier.

Lynn's Comments: Even on the most miserable winter days, my kids seemed immune to the cold. Mittens, boots, warm socks and headgear were fought against in their hurry to get out doors. They only came in when they were blue and shivering and had to be thawed out in a hot bath. Knowing he was freezing, I once called out to Aaron saying, "What are you waiting for, why don't you come inside?" and he replied, "My fingers still work!"

Lynn's Comments: One of the children's books I loved best was about a family of rabbits who painted the woods with all the colours of the rainbow. In spring they painted the buds bright green, in the fall they painted the leaves different colours, and in winter, they painted the shadows on the snow. Even now, whenever I see long turquoise-grey shadows stretching across a snowy lane, I remember the illustrations in that book.

Lynn's Comments: The Lynn Lake arena had a row of heat lamps along the ceiling, but the warmth dissipated long before it reached the bleachers. Parents who sat through hours of practice and many games shivered miserably despite blankets, parkas and warm winter gloves. We were grateful for rotgut coffee and the occasional shouting match, which kept us pliable.

Lynn's Comments: My friend Carolyn Sadowska (a professional comedienne who's known for her comic impressions of Her Majesty the Queen) and coincidentally Aaron's Grade 1 Teacher once told me that our monarch ate bacon with her fingers, which would render this approved mealtime etiquette. I wondered, then, how she would tackle a cob of corn. Food for thought.

Lynn's Comments: Yes, this happened--and with all the theatrical sarcasm seen here. This was what made our marriage so much fun. We were both able to laugh and make jokes out of just about anything.

Lynn's Comments: My partner hates to shop for clothing. If I am lucky enough to steer him into a men’s wear store, I have to be careful not to be too enthusiastic, too desperate or too demanding. A few weeks ago, we were successfully collecting things for him to wear on a Mexican vacation. Miserable, he had tried on shorts, shirts and two pairs of light pants. Some of these were going to work!

As I waited outside the changing room, I could hear him mumbling about the music. It was the awful boomf-boomf you hear everywhere; the kind with a wailing auto-tuned voice and repeated lyrics, repeated percussion. Suddenly, he burst out of the cubicle and sprinted for the exit door. I ran after him with the clothing and he told me to leave it all behind. "What’s wrong?" I hollered as he headed for the car. "I can't stand the music any longer!" he cried. "It’s driving me crazy!"

It had been driving me crazy, too. As we drove away without our purchase, I wondered who in the world chooses that awful music, and if anyone had done a study on the economic loss to retail shops, bars and restaurants since this stuff began to "stream"!
