Lynn's Comments: I don't remember my son's first girlfriend, but I do remember my brother's. I must have had more fun teasing my brother.

Lynn's Comments: This is so close to the bone, I hardly want to comment! Ah, but I'm into this now, so here goes. I had a real crush on Calvin, a boy in my class. After school, he delivered the paper on East 5th street (my street), so I'd wait for him and walk with him as he folded and tossed the papers onto porches—house after house.

Lynn's Comments: Although he enjoyed having company, he never returned my feelings. That didn't deter me. I was sure, with perseverance, he'd come around.

Lynn's Comments: This is also true. Sadly, I burned my 5-year diary. What I'd give to have it now!

Lynn's Comments: The food colouring dyed my head a deep brick red. I don't think it coloured my hair, but I was convinced I looked beguilingly different.

Lynn's Comments: It did rain. I was wearing a light blue coat and the red colouring dripped down onto my collar and shoulders. I didn't want to spoil our walk, so I didn't run home until the colour ruined my coat.

Lynn's Comments: Calvin did show my notes to his friends. I can still see them laughing. I can still feel the humiliation, but I still liked him. A lot.
Many years later, when I was well into the comic strip and a bit full of myself, I saw Calvin in a restaurant. He recognized me and stood up for a moment to say hello. He said he knew my work. He said he was driving racecars for a living and I told him I'd love to watch. We haven't seen each other since, but now and then, I do wonder what he's up to and if he ever thinks of me. Yes, anyone who says there is no such thing as young love has never been young and in love. The first time is unforgettable!

Lynn's Comments: We had one bathroom in our house on 5th Street. If Dad came home in a bad mood, we all ran for the comfort of the “throne” before he could lock himself in there and relax. I once went to visit Harry Morgan (of “Mash” fame.) While showing me around their LA house, his wife said, “Lynn, Harry and I have been married a long time and I gotta tell you, the secret to a happy marriage is having separate bathrooms!” I have to agree.

Lynn's Comments: Looking back on these busy days, I find it hard to imagine having all that energy. My motto now is: “I'm going to do that and that, and this and this…but first, a nap.”

Lynn's Comments: I try to make a comment about each of these cartoons but there are times when nothing comes to mind. Where ideas come from has always been a mystery. When I first joined the National Cartoonists Society and could finally talk face to face with cartoonists I'd admired for years, the thing we'd discuss most was: “where and how do you get your ideas?” If you have the gift, ideas come. Ideas come when you are on a deadline and have no choice but to produce something. Good or bad, the idea has to be written, drawn up and sent in. It's a real job.
I have no idea where the idea for this strip came from, except that it seemed like a good gag at the time—and if I was to do it again, I'd change the colour. I think it would look better if the word “Worse” was in turquoise and if Mike had a deep turquoise shirt! Otherwise, it still looks OK!

Lynn's Comments: When I turned 40, it was no biggie. I rather liked being 40; I was doing some good work, my kids were becoming independent and my wrinkles weren't getting me down. I think men “crest” earlier when it comes to aging. This surprised me.

Lynn's Comments: Yes. We acquired several age-soothing vehicles: a replica touring car, a Jeep convertible, a blue tractor and a backhoe!

Lynn's Comments: Model trains were added to the list, and this hobby became an obsession.
Saturday May 25, 2019
Lynn's Comments: It began with N gage, then HO, then trains big enough to ride on.

Lynn's Comments: I still keep overripe bananas in my freezer. But I peel them first.

Lynn's Comments: The model train set filled the basement, and then an outdoor, ride-on railway ran through the woods outside our country home.
Wednesday May 29, 2019
Lynn's Comments: The trains added a new storyline to the strip as I was brought into the fantasy world of model railways.

Lynn's Comments: There was so much to learn and to build. With artistry and serious focus, my husband built one of the most intricate and beautiful models in Ontario. He connected with other like-minded men, and soon, our circle of friends included Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas: two of the “9 Old Men” —the original animators at the Disney Studios in Los Angeles. Ollie's ride-on trains added to Walt Disney's fascination with model railways. After he had filled his own back yard, his wife suggested he find a piece of land where he could really enjoy his hobby…and Disneyland, the theme park, was born!
