Ted: Browse The Strips

Lynn's Comments: Looking back at these strips, I can see exactly when they were done by the kinds of things I slotted into the background. In this scene, John and Ted are having a chat over lunch, and rather than draw two talking heads, I put them in a bar. In an effort to be up to date, I showed them playing one of the latest table-top video games. Strange... I recently found one of these covered in dust in an "antique" shop!

Lynn's Comments: Here, chauvinist Ted tries to influence John Patterson to be a bit more assertive when it comes to women. As far as I know, my husband had nobody like this in his circle of chums, but it was necessary to insert a character who was not exactly likeable or practical -- to help create and support new dialogue.

Lynn's Comments: I could never understand the cavalier way in which the men and the kids in my life regarded cleaning and maintenance of the house. They never seemed to take into account that the hall had been neatly tidied--they just kicked off their boots and happily dumped their clothing on the floor. My complaints were greeted with surprise and a "what's your problem" shrug. Later, after I hired someone to help me clean up, I too became complacent about dirty shoes in the hallway and wet towels on the banister. "Oh well," I'd say to myself, "Mavis will take care of it tomorrow!" A mess only registers if you have to tidy it up yourself.

Lynn's Comments: This is the prayer my grandfather always said before a big meal. "For what we are about to receive, may the lord make us truly thankful." We thought it was a great prayer. It was sincere. It was genuinely heartfelt, and it said what needed to be said--before the gravy got cold!

Lynn's Comments: Here's where the "soap opera" comes into FBorFW. There had to be some romantic conflict in the story, so when Connie moved away, I enjoyed exploring some of the "what-ifs." Would people like John and Ted meet and talk like this in real life? Maybe not. Still, it was a way to answer some of the questions a sympathetic fly on the wall might ask: What if Ted felt badly? What if he realized his mistake? Exploring questions like these gave me the incentive to produce and to stay on deadline.

Lynn's Comments: Every now and then I could work in a "public service announcement" thanks to our in-house dentist. Grinding your teeth at night is something many of us do without being aware of it. You can even crack a filling with the strength of your jaw. A "bite splint" will help to relax your jaws at night and keep you from having that awful head-achy feeling in the morning. Sadly, it can't help to solve the problems that make you grind your teeth in the first place!

Lynn's Comments: Like other twists in the story line, this revelation came as a surprise to me. I had no idea that Ted had been interested in his receptionist/secretary! The neat thing about Irene was that she took Ted away from Connie. Connie could move on. Irene had a "throw-away" part; her character didn't need to be rounded out. I invented a character I could play with for a while and then ignore--the kind of role in which an actor would hate to be cast!

Lynn's Comments: Here, I've created an "Everest of woe". I can't see past an infraction until I've confronted the offended party and apologized.

Lynn's Comments: In order to inject a little intrigue into the story, I made John's Doctor friend, Ted, a very bad influence. Although he was completely fictional, I was often asked who he "really was."

Lynn's Comments: When the content of the comic strip began to bore me a bit, I tried to introduce some angst into my writing. This story was based on a real situation, but I changed the details so that the people involved never knew it was their story.

Lynn's Comments: With my doctor advocating for a home birth and readers making it seem like a bad decision, I was setting the scene here for something to save the day.
