Lynn's Comments: When Farley came to live with us, my thinking was "leftovers disposal unit" but my husband had other ideas. A dog was not to be used for recycling; he was to eat foods naturally consumed in the wild. This meant regular trips to a mink farm to retrieve freshly ground and frozen meat by-products. This unpleasant stuff was then mixed with a special kibble, which Farley ate without relish. Whenever I could get away with it, I'd break down and slip him a treat...ham, beef with gravy, you know, the GOOD stuff. Eventually, I discovered that my husband was doing the same and once he had tasted people food, Farley held out for the goods. He became a little choosy - and I didn't blame him one bit!

Lynn's Comments: I did these strips after agreeing to look after a friend's two-year-old. Both my kids were in school, and my home was no longer baby-proof. I had forgotten how to feed, carry, talk to, and otherwise live with a toddler and was right out of my element. To add to this, my charge was the spawn of "New Age" parents who felt that discipline curbed a child's natural curiosity. In other words, the kid was a terror. His mother arrived before I called and begged for mercy. Thankfully, she never asked again!

Lynn's Comments: Although I never saw my children trying to eat from a bowl like a dog, it was something I tried to do myself. The weird thing about this confession is that I was in my twenties when I did it!

Lynn's Comments: When I worked with advertising agencies, one of the things I liked to do was to come up with slogans and catchy commentary. I never took the products as seriously as I took the marketing of them. I doubt that I could do a good job of this today--I'm far too cynical!

Lynn's Comments: Our dog Willy would wait until we had finished eating before he dug into his kibble. If there was the smallest chance of leftovers, he wanted to be sure he had room. I did this strip with compassion and understanding—I wouldn't want to eat the same thing everyday either!

Lynn's Comments: This one strip brought so many comments that I had to have help to answer the mail. It seems that most of us see our pets as part of the family.

Lynn's Comments: After all the care we put into choosing their food, a dog usually prefers garbage. A garbage-flavoured kibble might be something to consider.

Lynn's Comments: When my son was teething, I got tired of the mushy residue left after the available teething biscuits had been gummed. I had a dog (Farley) at the time, and in desperation, I gave Aaron a dog biscuit. He liked it. Dog biscuits became our teething chew of choice. Maybe there’s an invention here for an enterprising mom!

Lynn's Comments: This strip was a lot of fun to do. Sometimes I had no punch line in mind at all…I just wanted to draw the dog!

Lynn's Comments: I loved making up names. "Bolus" was the perfect name for a dietician!

Lynn's Comments: This strip became the title of one of the annual collection books. Finding a title was often the hardest part of putting a book together. I always tried to find the title in the text of the strips that appeared in that book.

Lynn's Comments: Again, pets and babies provide a needed break from serious things.

Lynn's Comments: Drawing pictures like this was therapeutic because I knew other parents would commiserate.
