Lynn's Comments: Parents who stay at home today are fortunate to be considered part of the working class! There was a time when you would almost apologize for staying home to raise your family. I was lucky to be able to work from home and be there when my kids were toddlers and later when came home from school. I still think it's the best and most important job I've ever had.

Lynn's Comments: Here's an example of where I redrew the last panel for republication. If I suggested that spanking was a disciplinary tactic in our home, I got mail. Rarely did things get so out of hand! There were times, however, when a swat happened and was more of a blow to the ego than a sting on the behind. Still, any "violent" image was seriously frowned upon by my readers--who in the crafted and edited world of cartoons, preferred clever commentary to a loss of control.

Lynn's Comments: Aaron did learn to play a few pieces on the trumpet. Through perseverance and some threatening, his junior high school music teacher succeeded in placing him in the school band, where he suffered along with the rest of the uncommitted until summer came.

Lynn's Comments: I have waited in hospital lounges many times hoping that my presence alone would help to heal or to make someone's illness go away. Perhaps, the vigil is as much for me as it is for the person I worry for. Just by being there, I feel that I'm actually doing something.

Lynn's Comments: My folks went out of their way to make sure that Aaron had something fun to do every day. And.... typical kid.... he figured this was the way life should be--ALL the time!

Lynn's Comments: Alan's adjustment from singlehood to his relationship with Joan was a constant source of comedy. The thing I love about my brother is the way he greets adversity; he makes it into a story, which he embellishes just enough to make it great.

Lynn's Comments: When they first came out, answering machines were a new toy for everyone. Some folks were horrified by the thought of leaving a recorded message, while others became instant hosts of their own daily show. I loved the way folks said, "Hi, I'm not here right now." -- as if they had gone to that place on "the other side." It was hard to record it right the first time, so I found saying repeatedly that I wasn't there depressing. Kids enjoyed the anonymity and entertained themselves by irritating anyone who had this device, but eventually we all became accustomed to and dependent on the answering machine. Now we're adapting to much more sophisticated toys!

Lynn's Comments: I was sure that with the huge number of readers seeing this story, surely there was someone out there who had experienced this very thing. I decided to give one of these original strips to the first person who wrote and told me their story.

Lynn's Comments: My kids didn't feel the need to talk endlessly on the phone the way I did. Even with the advent of cordless handsets, they preferred to just go over to a friend's house and hang out. One thing about in living in a small rural community; your friends are all a short bike ride away.

Lynn's Comments: One of my better one-liners. When something like this hit my head, the whole week was in the bag! Coming up with a decent ending to each 4-panel strip wasn't easy, so one good one made the rest of the strips look good, too.

Lynn's Comments: Michael, being five years older than Elizabeth, was allowed to stay at home alone for a couple of hours after school--before his mother came home from work. The sitter (and good friend) lived next door and kept an eye on him, but still, I got complaints about this "unhealthy situation."

Lynn's Comments: My dad loved to invent characters and to story tell. When he read a book to us, he read like a practiced thespian. He spoke with accents, changed the pitch of his voice, and made fairy tales come alive. When I did this strip, my dad had been gone for a number of years. I was able to bring him to life again by writing and drawing short vignettes like this one. It would have been just like Dad to call and pretend to be the Easter Bunny!

Lynn's Comments: About three months ago, I took a few days to clean out all my kitchen and studio drawers. I discovered pens, pencils, erasers, tape, scissors, glue, push pins--enough to open a small shop. I put everything away where it should be and made sure to place supplies close to the phones. Yesterday, I called a friend to ask for an address--and I couldn't find a pen!!

Lynn's Comments: What's fun about illustrations like this one is the obvious use of things used in the 80s. Here you see the old style telephone. With the move to BC from Ontario, I rid myself of the old landline phone and its spiral cord, and something familiar disappeared. I never thought about it being a relic until on a recent trip to New York. I stayed in an old hotel where the young concierge was struggling with a hopelessly twisted phone cord. I took the receiver from him, held the end of the cord closest to the phone, and let the receiver spin until the knots were out of it. The cord hung down perfectly. "How did you do that?!" he asked, surprised. I couldn't believe that a modern, technically savvy young man hadn't figured it out for himself. Oh, how times have changed!

Lynn's Comments: Before I had my own business, I dropped my son at daycare and went to work like most other single moms. When Aaron was sick, I had, of course, to leave work, pick him up, and take him home. I felt guilty for leaving my job. I felt guilty for resenting the interruption in my day, and I felt guilty for not being a stay at home mom.
