Lynn's Comments: After this strip appeared, the quote "Mom's having another one of her fat days" became part of our collective vocabulary.

Lynn's Comments: When this strip was first published in 1984 the second panel read, "I can't--all my stuff is in THAT one!!" The other day I received a call from Sue, my long-suffering editor, who asked me if it was better grammatically to say, "All my stuff is in THIS one"--considering that John was referring to the bathroom directly in front of him and not the one downstairs. I agreed, and we changed the dialogue. I guess this proves that it's never too late to be caught by an editor!

Lynn's Comments: When I look at this now, I smile. I was not yet forty, but I could see myself aging. Every wrinkle was worrisome. The tiniest hint of an eye bag sent me looking for creams. We had been married for a few years and I was wearing some pretty tattered nightgowns. I didn't care much about looking good when I went to bed... as long as the face looked good in the morning.
Now that I'm 65, I have given up on the face, but I wear pretty nightgowns--I seem to be doing things in reverse!

Lynn's Comments: This trip was quite an adventure for all of us. I preoccupied myself with organizing clothes and other things he had to take--which took my mind off losing him to the great world out there.

Lynn's Comments: Rod spent every minute he could in his treasured workshop. He could make or repair almost anything. Even though he was usually very careful, there were times when he did go to the clinic with a bandage or two! This always gave his patients a laugh and inspired me to do this strip.

Lynn's Comments: This strip makes me laugh, now. When I drew it, I was YOUNG. At this stage of my life, I have earned the right (and the wrinkles) to complain!

Lynn's Comments: I do love checking into a clean, attractive hotel room--knowing that I don't have to wash the porcelain receptacles or change the sheets. When I was a busy mom, this was a luxury I craved!

Lynn's Comments: It seems funny to me now to see that I saw myself as "old" when I did this strip. When I look in the mirror today, the 67 year old me looks very different from the face I saw then. I have had to adjust to creases, folds, furrows, jowls and bifocals. I also have a slight tremor, so my head shakes. You gotta joke about this stuff. I like to say, "It's a good thing my head shakes from side to side. If it nodded, I'd be agreeing to everything I'm ever asked to do!"
As teenagers, my friends and I made fun of "old folks" Senior's homes we called "Wrinkle City" or "Menopause Manor"--well, I'm there now, and the picture looks different from the other side. When my grandfather said it took courage to be "old," I believe him. And the best laugh of all is: to my aunt Monica who is 85, --I'm a youngster!!

Lynn's Comments: My three-year-old granddaughter and her friends have learned the word "consequences." When you do something bad--there are consequences. Recently, after a nice evening of playtime and stories, Laura decided she wasn't going to go to sleep. She whined and cried and tried to wake her baby brother, with whom she shares a room. Her mother, Katie, said she would have to give up her favourite sleep toys if she didn't end the strike. Laura whined and lost her teddy. She then lost her blankie, her pillow, her quilt and her sheets. The whining continued until she was lying on a stripped bed with nothing but her "pull-ups" to keep her warm. At this point she capitulated, stopped her bad behaviour, and decided to sleep.
Katie was pleased to have had the standoff resolved--thanks to "consequences."

Lynn's Comments: I soon returned to the bathroom. I'd left the box of dye where he could reach it, and he had emptied every bottle into the tub. My son was sitting in a dark, murky swamp happy as a clam. I lifted him out of the water, and was surprised to see that his small behind had been dyed a dark, greenish-blue like an Easter egg. I thought it was funny, but Aaron was terrified. "I've got a green BUM!" He wailed. "I got a green bum!!!!" The colour lasted for over a week. He went to daycare afraid to ask for help in the bathroom in case someone saw. Fortunately, the staff had been forewarned and had the courtesy not to laugh out loud! This is a story I haven't let him forget.

Lynn's Comments: I remember this stage of my life so clearly. My friends and I would secretly compare our progress, wondering why we seemed to be slower to change than others. The funny thing is, from the age of 60 onward, my friends and I have been doing the same thing!

Lynn's Comments: I was getting close to 40 here and starting to worry about the decline. Now, at 72, I think someone who's 40 is a kid!

Lynn's Comments: I clearly remember sucking my thumb. I think I did this until I was in grade one. I remember the feel and the taste and the comfort. The good thing about thumbs (I thought at the time) is that they are permanently attached and always available.
